Build food tolerance with immunotherapy

If you or your child struggles with food allergies, you’re not alone—and you’re not without options.

Life is busy, and you need relief fast.

What is food immunotherapy?

Food immunotherapy works by training your immune system to respond more calmly to ingredients that currently cause a reaction—whether that’s peanuts, shellfish, dairy, eggs, or another common trigger. Over time, we introduce tiny, controlled doses of the allergen to help your body build resistance safely. At Premier Allergy & Asthma, our team develops a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and medical history. The goal? To reduce your symptoms, protect against severe reactions, and give you the freedom to enjoy life—and food—without fear.

What can food immunotherapy treat?

Hives or skin reactions

Raised, itchy welts may appear after consuming certain foods—especially peanuts, eggs, or dairy.

Throat swelling or difficulty breathing

Allergic reactions can cause airway inflammation, which may lead to coughing, wheezing, or restricted breathing.

Nausea and digestive issues

Food allergies may trigger cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating after eating.

The food immunotherapy process

Step 1

Personalized consultation and testing

We’ll begin with a detailed review of your symptoms, health history, and food exposure. Skin testing, food diaries, and blood work may be used to identify your specific allergens and determine if food immunotherapy is right for you.

Step 2

Starting small, building safely

If you're a candidate, your provider will guide you through the first stages of immunotherapy. You’ll begin with a very small dose of the allergen under medical supervision, with 24-hour access to results through your patient portal.

Step 3

Ongoing dose increases

You’ll return to the office for regular visits (often biweekly) to gradually increase your dose under observation. These visits help ensure your body is responding safely while building long-term tolerance.

Step 4

Monitoring progress and maintaining results

We’ll closely track your response to treatment, adjust the plan as needed, and empower you with education and safety strategies. Many patients reach a point where exposure to their allergen no longer causes symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Do you struggle with allergic reactions to an ingredient or food? Are there certain foods that you avoid to steer clear of pain and discomfort? Do you dream of enjoying meals without experiencing unpleasant side effects? If so, you may be a strong candidate for food immunotherapy. To ensure this treatment fits your needs, your provider will review your medical history, administer a skin test, and take the time to learn how you suffer from your reactions.

Treatment time varies depending on your allergen, history, and response. Most patients undergo dose escalation for several months, followed by a maintenance phase that may continue for a year or longer. Missed appointments or illnesses can extend the timeline, but your provider will adjust your plan accordingly.

Yes. Doses are introduced in extremely small amounts and monitored closely during in-office visits. Serious reactions are rare, and our team is trained and equipped to respond quickly. We’ll also provide clear instructions and education on how to stay safe throughout the process.
